Aston's Lab Notes

Everybody wants the best jokes for the right moment. A car ride. A lunch table. A dad who just asked for one.

Here are the ones that work. I sorted them into groups so you can find the right kind fast: short ones, animal ones, food ones, and pun ones. Each group gets a groan-o-meter rating — that's how loud the groan is when someone hears it. Five groans is the top score.

What makes a joke one of the best jokes

The best jokes have two things. First, a setup that sounds normal. Second, a punchline that flips it. If people can guess the ending, the joke is too easy. If they can't guess it at all, the joke makes no sense. The best jokes sit right in the middle.

Short ones win over long ones almost every time. You can tell a good one-liner in five seconds, before anyone gets bored.

Best one-liners

These are fast. Say them and walk away.

  • Why don't skeletons fight each other? They don't have the guts.
  • I used to be a banker, but I lost interest.
  • What do you call a fish with no eyes? A fsh.
  • I'm reading a book about anti-gravity. It's impossible to put down.
  • Why did the scarecrow win an award? He was outstanding in his field.
  • What do you call fake spaghetti? An impasta.

Groan-o-meter: 3/5. These are quick and clean, but people have heard a few of them before.

Best animal jokes

Animal jokes always land because everyone knows the animal.

  • What do you call a bear with no teeth? A gummy bear.
  • Why can't you give Elsa a balloon? Because she'll let it go.
  • What do you call a dog that does magic? A labracadabrador.
  • What did the ocean say to the beach? Nothing, it just waved.
  • Why did the chicken join a band? Because it had drumsticks.
  • What do you call a sleeping dinosaur? A dino-snore.

Groan-o-meter: 4/5. The dog one gets a real laugh. The others get a groan, which is still a win.

Best food jokes

Food jokes work at the dinner table, which is exactly when you need one.

  • Why did the tomato turn red? Because it saw the salad dressing.
  • What do you call cheese that isn't yours? Nacho cheese.
  • Why did the cookie go to the doctor? It was feeling crumbly.
  • What did the grape say when it got stepped on? Nothing, it just let out a little wine.
  • Why don't eggs tell jokes? They'd crack each other up.
  • What kind of key opens a banana? A monkey.

Groan-o-meter: 5/5. The wine one and the monkey one are top of this whole list. Save them.

Best wordplay jokes

These need a second to land. That's part of the fun — you can watch someone's face catch up.

  • What do you call a can opener that doesn't work? A can't opener.
  • Why did the math book look sad? It had too many problems.
  • What do you call a belt made of watches? A waist of time.
  • What has ears but can't hear? A cornfield.
  • Why did the golfer bring two pairs of pants? In case he got a hole in one.
  • What do you call a fish that wears a crown? King of the sea, obviously. But also a kingfish.

Groan-o-meter: 4/5. These are the ones smart adults actually laugh at.

Best school jokes

Try these at lunch. They work on teachers too.

  • Why did the student eat his homework? The teacher said it was a piece of cake.
  • What's a pencil's favorite subject? Drawing conclusions.
  • Why was the math teacher bad at gym class? He kept dividing by zero.
  • What do you call a teacher who never farts in public? A private tutor.
  • Why did the gym teacher blow the whistle? The class was going in circles.

Groan-o-meter: 4/5. The private tutor one takes a second to click. Give it a beat.

Groan-o-meter, ranked

Here's the whole set ranked by how strong the groan hits, worst to best in the best possible way.

Start with food jokes if you want the biggest reaction. Start with one-liners if you only have five seconds.

How to actually tell one

Say it slow. Don't rush the setup — that's the part that makes the punchline surprise anyone.

Pause right before the last word. That little gap is what makes people lean in.

If nobody laughs, don't explain it. Just move to the next joke. A joke you have to explain is already over.

For jokes with a "who's there" setup instead of a straight punchline, that's a different game with its own rules — I wrote the whole pattern for those in knock knock jokes.
